Family correspondence, legal documents, and other items of family members in the lowcountry, and the counties of Darlington, Kershaw, and elsewhere in South Carolina. Chiefly sermons and other papers of Methodist minister Whatcoat Asbury Gamewell (1814-1869), including manuscript, Oct. 1835, "A Visit to the Jews Synagogue," documenting account of his visit to a Charleston synagogue; letter, 25 Mar. 1866, relating details of an arson fire which destroyed the public square in Darlington, S.C., and noting rumor that the destruction would continue. Rev. Gamewell's pocket diary, 1866, includes observations re ministerial activities, crops and farming, difficulties in reuniting the Northern and Southern churches, and race relations, including thoughts on 4th of July celebrations, "This is independance day: but alas what independance for us whites of the South! We are more the Slaves of the North than our fathers were to the crown of Great Britain....The freed people have a great dinner and invite us to it.... a goodly number of our men attended it of which I am glad." Other family papers include 1757 bond from Henry DeSaussure, planter, St. Helena Parish, Granville County, [later Beaufort District, S.C.], to John Wragg, Charlestown, S.C; and include letter, 31 Oct. [18]69, Spartanburg, S.C., J. Gus Gamewell, to "My Dear Sister," reporting the death of their father, [W.A. Gamewell]. Items documenting family ties in Kershaw county include deed, 14 Mar. 1846, John M. DeSaussure to Daniel L. DeSaussure, Kershaw County, S.C., for four and 67/100 acres; will, 1857, of D.L. DeSaussure; and "Plat of House Tracts, and adjacent tracts, on Little Pine Tree Creek, adjoining Camden ... from plats of Joseph Kershaw & Allen McCaskill," with notations re aquisitions and sales, 1840-1868. Later items include an account book/recipe book of Selma Parrish, and newspaper clippings re Parrish's work as a home demonstration agent in Kershaw County, S.C.; autograph book, 1883-1884, of Willie S. Parrish; photocopy of handwritten transcription of journal of Harriet Kershaw Lang's trip to N.C. mountains, 15 July - 24 Aug. 1881; and newspaper obituary and tributes to Joseph Augustus Gamewell (1850-1940).
